Groups of two or more are now "guaranteed to issue" which means that regardless of medical conditions insurance carriers must accept your organization.

Here are some types of plans available for small groups:

HMO plans feature low cost doctor visit co-payments and no deductibles.
HSA compatible plans feature high deductibles and allow employees to obtain tax deduction up to the amount of the deductible
PPO plans are available which allow a bit more freedom but have deductibles.
California Choice is a pool of carriers that allow your employees to select from different carriers with just one bill to you as the employer. (For example, one person can choose Kaiser, one can choose Blue Shield, three can choose Health Net and your firm receives one bill.

Group Checklist

In order to qualify as a bona fide group you will need:

DE6 (Wages and Earnings)
Worker's Compensation for Employees
Census Information (Ages of Employees)
Zip code of residence for each employee

1099's do not normally qualify as employees

Employees must work minimum of 20 hrs per week to qualify for group coverage.

Employer must contribute at least 50pct. of least expensive plan offered for employee only

Important Note About Rates:

The carriers are allowed by state law to have some leeway when applying rates to small groups under 50 employees. The leeway is known as RAF (Rate Adjustment Factor), standard being 1.0. They may charge up to 1.10 and down to .90 of the standard rate depending on the size of the group. Generally speaking a group of 2 to 5 would be charged 1.10. Please take that into account when using our quote system.
